Etterna Charting Tournament 2023

Round 3 play-through complete and votes cast! Thanks once again to the submitters, it was interesting seeing how people approached a number of areas in this song, particularly the slower isolated part near the midpoint.

I have more sense of urgency for charting round 3 than i did for my Earth and Space science assignment :skull: :skull: :skull:

You werenā€™t the only one either lol, it seemed a lot of people felt that same pressure

Tbh, at least in my case, it is creatively very taxing to produce a new chart every week while keeping it high enough effort to not be embarrassing to submit, Iā€™m definitely not used to creating new stuff regularly as opposed to bursts of activity/inspo. I knew what I signed up for, but damn, the endurance fest is real.

Yeah, that was kind of the intention. It was designed to be a week of charting, and a week break, so it wasnā€™t a consistent grind, but still felt taxing on a charter, to help get them used to charting under pressure (It was in part because of how busy I am, and part because a lot of charts get finished after a pack host dmā€™s a submitter 1 day before release asking for updates and the charter suddenly has to work under pressure and I wanted this tournament to somewhat slightly resemble that type of pressure to finish charts. Mainly my busy schedule though.)

The last round will likely be the hardest for people - intentionally.

Everyone involved is doing great though, even people who ran out of time, its nice to see so many different approaches to the music each time

For me, the main struggle has been relying on myself to review and septuple check every last corner of the file to make sure itā€™s consistent and thereā€™s no goofy stuff going on, as opposed to getting it playtest-ed or reviewed by another person. I am not a detail oriented person and I struggle a lot with finding little mistakes and inconsistencies in anything that I create so this is definitely good practice for that. (Try as I might, I still notice all the faults immediately after I turn in the final product, no matter what it is lol.)

voting has ended, round 4 will begin shortly, and the standings will be posted in the round 4 thread

Welcome to the final round of ECT2023! Everyone who submitted in round 3 should have received an email with the synced .sm and audio file! If you canā€™t find it, check spam!
This track is going to test your ability to chart more complex and intricate music, and I look forward to seeing how everyone varies in their approaches!

Due to the complexity of the track this round, there will be judges who will choose their favourite charts in voting! The way the judges points system works might change depending on how many people submit their charts this round. If it does, I will explain it clearly in the round 4 voting thread next week!

Round 4ā€™s song is ā€œSurge Stormā€ by ā€œKurorakā€! Check it out below!

Just for clarity, Iā€™ll go over the rules each round!
What ISNā€™T allowed:

No insulting/attacking other peoples entries
No harassment or bullying of any charters or organisers involved.
Must be a 4k (4 key) chart
You must submit the chart as a .sm or .ssc file. If youā€™re from another rhythm game, Iā€™m sure there are many ways to convert your filetype to .sm/.ssc
No cutting the music. (The music is at most 3 minutes, donā€™t worry)
You may alter the provided sync however you like, but if the chart is off sync it will be disqualified
From round 2 onwards, you MUST submit a chart each round or you will be removed from the event.
Sharing your chart before the end of the event, to avoid people knowing who made what.
If making modcharts, donā€™t put anything malicious in them (Obviously)
Collaborations are not allowed
Didnā€™t think iā€™d need to add this but donā€™t be a twat and judge peoples charting speed by looking at the dates of a submission (seriously, come on)

What IS allowed:

Dumping is allowed.
Gimmicks (Such as the cmod gimmick or ā€œrolltechā€ and other obscure playstyles).
Modcharts (Including lua stuff).
Xmod charts.
Visual things (such as colour theory).
Any other creative/unique thing you can do with a song, so long as it uses the required formats (.sm or .ssc)

You have until the 18th of may to chart this track.
Best of luck, everyone! I canā€™t wait to see peoples approach!
If you have any questions or complaints, you can leave them in this thread OR send me a message privately on the forum and Iā€™ll answer them when possible (I canā€™t promise an immediate response, but Iā€™ll try respond as soon as I can)

Holy poly. Will the players true names be revealed after the contest? There are a couple charters who Iā€™m really interested in now.

The charters who submit in round 4 will be revealed after the event is over, because I want to congratulate all of them and get them the respect they deserve for actually going through with all 4 rounds despite how understandably taxing itā€™s been for them

done with the chart :]
I just know imma get clapped tho :sob:

Submissions will close tomorrow at 2PM GMT+1.

Submissions have closed. Round 4ā€™s charts will be posted soon!

Round 4 voting has begun! 9 people have submitted their charts, each with their own unique take on what is by far the hardest song to chart in this event, you can download all the Round 4 charts here:

Round 4 charts

Due to the amount of submissions dropping below 10 for this round, the way the judges voting works has been changed! I will explain it below:

Each judge now chooses 1 chart to award 25 extra points to. If 2 or more judges vote for the same chart, the points will stack, so that chart will get 50+ extra points total!

Cdtitles are labelled with any specific requests for the chart a charter gave. (CMOD or XMOD etc). If a charter gave me no info, it will just be the name! (Unless I noticed in the editor that it is very very very clearly focused towards one or the other)

You can vote using the form below!

Voting form
Voting will last until the 25th of May!

To charters, obviously do not reveal which chart is yours, even if you figure it out.

Donā€™t harass or attack any charters. Feedback is fine, but donā€™t be a twat about it

If there are any problems, same as always, just message me on the forums here and Iā€™ll get back to you as soon as possible.

this event was super fun! ill be looking forward to the next ones :]

A tough ride to get through, but an enjoyable one with a lot of lessons to take from it.

Many thanks to Martzi for hosting this (and getting the songs commissioned, making it a new experience for everyone involved). A ton of gratitude goes out to Foxfire as well for playing through everyoneā€™s files live in all 4 rounds, and being a consistent way for everyone to get some sort of feedback as we progressed in the tournament.

Thereā€™s just one thing left for everyone to do:

CHOOSE YOUR CHARTER!

Voting has closed, final thread will be posted soon

Thank you to everyone who participated in this event, be it with the charters or the people playing and voting! Etterna Charting Tournament has now came to an end, and all the results will be included below!

In round 4, the judges got to pick a chart they considered their favourite out of the pool! Hereā€™s how they voted:

  • Dour: Effervescent Elephant
  • Temma: Lucky Llama
  • Zeta: Whimsical Warthog
  • James May: Whimsical Warthog
  • Tim: Xenophilic Xerus
  • Windoze: Lucky Llama

Due to that, the bonus points from judges look like this!

  • Whimsical warthog + 50 (Zeta & James May)
  • Lucky Llama + 50 (Windoze & Temma)
  • Effervescent Elephant + 25 (Dour)
  • Xenophilic Xerus + 25 (Tim)

With that in mind, here are the results!

The gap between first and second place was unbelievably narrow at the end.

  • First place: theropfather (AKA. Whimsical Warthog) with 383 points!
  • Second place: Pogeybuster (AKA. Effervescent Elephant) with 380 points!
  • Third place: aDavid4 (AKA. Lucky Llama) with 336 points!

Though, while I want to celebrate the winners, I also want to make sure everyone is aware of how great each contestant did. Charting 4 full charts back to back with only 1 week to chart them in is not an easy task for most charters. Those who made it to the end deserve respect for making it through the event at all! Here is everyone who made it, excluding the winners:

  • Malalaika (AKA. Yeilding Yak)
  • Agyll (AKA. Xenophilic Xerus)
  • MyZterioN- (AKA. Vibrant Viper)
  • Delta Epsilon (AKA. Jovial Jaguar)
  • Toony3243 (AKA. Optimistic Ostrich)
  • Jerkface69 (AKA. Keen Kookaburra)

These charters managed to chart 4 songs theyā€™d never heard of in only a week each, most of which pushed them out of their comfort zone too. I believe they deserve respect as well for that!

Here is the final points list, along with this roundā€™s results:

Summary
  • Final points:
  1. Whimsical Warthog - 383
  2. Effervescent Elephant - 380
  3. Lucky Llama - 336
  4. Yielding Yak - 211
  5. Xenophilic Xerus - 180
  6. Vibrant Viper - 168
  7. Jovial Jaguar - 137
  8. Optimistic Ostrich - 135
  9. Keen Kookaburra - 123

With all that said, thank you to everyone for participating, and I hope you enjoyed the event!

I will contact the winners to pay out their earnings.

For clarity! Anyone can chart the music from this event if they wish. And the charters who took part can release their charts and edit them how they wish too. So if you wanted to chart a song and werenā€™t in the event, feel free to chart it.

Special thanks again to everyone who helped this happen while I was organising everything.

Thank you so very much for hosting this event, and to everyone who participated! Itā€™s been a great time playing through all of the submissions and seeing what everyone was able to create in such a short time.
